A Full Circle Moment for OCCRA and a Bald Eagle in Need
In February, OCCRA volunteers Darci, Manon, and Katie responded to Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro, OR, where a compassionate Good Samaritan was keeping watch over a grounded adult bald eagle in distress. Thanks to their quick action, the volunteers were able to safely capture the injured bird and transport him to Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital for stabilization.
The following morning, our partners at Bird Alliance of Oregon took the eagle into their care. Under the skilled guidance of Wildlife Care Center Manager Ashley Lema—who also serves as OCCRA’s Lead Wildlife Specialist—and with the help of dedicated care center staff and volunteers, the eagle received treatment for injuries believed to be caused by a mid-air mating collision.
After two months of expert care and recovery, the eagle was ready to return to the wild. The release was a powerful and emotional moment, made even more special by the presence of the Good Samaritan who first stood guard. As the eagle soared back into the sky, he was joined by other bald eagles—perhaps even his mate, whose calls our volunteers had heard on the day of his rescue.
Moments like these are the heart of OCCRA’s mission. This is why we do what we do.
